畹町位于德宏南部，隔河与缅甸相邻。“畹町”系傣语音译，意为“太阳当顶”，所以人们喜欢把畹町叫做“太阳当顶的地方”。全市总面积 95． 34平方公里，总人口二万多，市区仅五千多人，是全中国最小的城市之一，也是云南的三个边境开放城市之一。
第二次世界大战期间，日军封锁了中国所有的出海口，滇缅公路成了国际反法西斯阵营援助中国战略物资的唯一陆上通道，畹町就成了中美英三国盟军的大本营，物资的集散地，每天有成百上千辆军车从这里将物资运往内地，几十万中国远征军从这里出入国境，畹町才开始发展起来。畹町河对岸是缅甸的九谷镇，两国鸡犬之声相闻，边民自由往来，友好互市。许多边民都有跨国姻亲关系，如混板寨仅有50余户人家，跨国婚姻就有20余户。许多缅甸人还到畹町经商，他们说缅语、卖缅货、使用两国货市，有的连招牌也用缅文书写。另外还有一些东南亚国家的商人也云集畹町，使畹町成了各国物资的集散地。美国、法国的化妆品，印度、巴基斯坦、尼泊尔、孟加拉国的首饰及工艺品，缅甸的小食品、农副产品、珠宝玉器，中国的各种工农业产品在这里都可以买到。
畹町有全国罕见的柚木林，郁郁葱葱的橡胶林，各种热带作物也很丰富。北门山上的森林公园，出国旅游，小龙江的热带雨林漂江游等是游客的好去处。
畹町桥位于畹町市区一侧，是中缅两国交界河上的界桥，也是中缅两国人民通商互市、经贸文化交流的重要通道。该桥于1938年抢修滇缅公路时初建，是当时我国对外联系的重要国际交通口岸。几十万中国远征军从这里进出境，几百万吨军援物资从桥上通过运往内地，因而名震一时。近几年为了两国边贸发展的需要，修成更宽更牢固的钢筋水泥桥。桥的两头分别驻有两国的海关、边防检查站等单位。每天都有成百上千的两国商人、边民在这里进出，一派和平安宁的祥和景象。
