东竹林寺位于德钦县奔子栏乡书松村南宁干顶东坡上，距中甸105公里，距奔子栏23公里，滇藏公路从寺后而过。噶丹·东竹林寺始建于清康熙六年（1667年），原名“冲冲措岗寺”，本为藏传佛教噶举派寺院，意为仙鹤湖畔之寺。字址在新寺西北约3公里处，曾因每年为皇帝举行祝寿法会一次，享受皇粮大米100驮（后减半）。 　
清康熙年间的东竹林寺，名声远扬。当时，昌都活佛帕巴拉·米榜格列甲措到该寺传教，并为该寺向清朝廷呈状，要求允许东竹林寺为皇上举行祝寿活动，皇上给予应允，并每年赏赐该寺百驮大米。此后，历代皇帝在财经、供品及特殊招帖、匾额、封诰等方面给东竹林寺诸多关照。五世达赖期间的扩建，也多由国库赐银。当时，寺内建成了能容纳两千多人的经堂大殿。大殿建筑和陈设引人注目。大殿正中的铜瓦殿内金光灿灿的五座镀金宝鼎佛光闪烁，还有强巴佛殿、护法殿、白伞盖母殿、如来殿、佛塔殿、藏书院、印经院、万万咒轮堂、斋戒堂等设于大殿内，使大殿气势和威力显而易见。大殿周围环绕着8所活佛静室和300多所僧舍。 　 新寺建筑井然有序，远远望去，平顶楼房鳞次栉比，严然一座城镇。位于中央的大经堂为四层土木结构建筑，82棵合抱大柱成网状密布，底层是全寺喇嘛诵经之处，正面供有格鲁派始祖宗喀巴及弟子达玛仁青和一世班禅克珠杰像（俗称师徒三尊），两旁是释迦牟尼、观世音、文殊、普贤等佛和菩萨像。二层新塑的强巴佛高68米，释迦牟尼佛殿的佛像高105米，铜质鎏金，佛冠及前胸镶满珍珠宝石，系拉萨色拉寺所赠。东竹林寺还珍藏着一幅长达8.5米，宽5.2米的大型唐卡，是用五彩丝线精织而成的护法神像，每年举行跳神法会时展出一次，供香客观瞻礼拜。
